We explore the dynamic tension between beliefs about the nature and proper behavior of men and women, and actual practices in a variety of Islamic societies, both historically and in the contemporary world. Specific case studies and theoretical works by both Middle Eastern and Western authors highlight the challenges of studying the economic and social implications of gender in Islamic societies. 3 Cr.
