Description
Why minor in Spanish? Spanish is the world's second most-spoken language and the third most-present language on the Internet. It is the official language of 21 countries and in the United States over 41 million people or 13.5% of the population speaks Spanish (US Census). In New York state the number of Spanish-speakers increases to 14.9% (2018 US Census). Spanish is also one of the six official languages of the United Nations and one of the 24 official languages of the European Union. Proficiency in Spanish is highly desirable in all job opportunities related to international issues and in many fields at the national level.
A Spanish minor will prepare you to better understand, communicate, serve and work with diverse Spanish-speaking communities at home and abroad. Our classes will help you identify and appreciate cultural connections and differences and facilitate your role as a global citizen. Students who complement their degree in international business, international studies, communications, criminal justice, health care, nursing, social work, sociology, and women and gender studies with a minor in Spanish will be competitive candidates in the job market.
Admission to the Program
Any undergraduate student can declare this minor.
Program Requirements (18 credits)
All courses in the minor must be completed with a grade of "C" or higher. Courses with grades lower than "C" must be repeated.
The minor in Spanish consists of 18 credits as follows:
