Description
The history minor places very few restrictions on students, allowing them to design a course of study that complements their individual interests and prospective careers. One such course of study could focus on digital and oral history courses. A minor in history brings with it many of the advantages of a history major: such as the opportunity to broaden and deepen your knowledge of the world and improve your writing, research, discussion, and critical thinking skills.
A minor in History is a particularly good match for students majoring in communication, journalism and broadcasting, English, environmental science, philosophy, anthropology, political science, international studies, sociology, international business, criminal justice, women and gender studies, African and African-American studies, or a foreign language.
Admission to the Program
Any undergraduate student can declare the minor in history.
Program Requirements
The minor in history requires 18 credits of history courses, at least nine of which must be upper-division (300/400 level). Only courses in which students earn a grade of "C" or higher satisfy these requirements. At least half of the credits must have been completed at Brockport.
Students may take up to 9 HST credits at the 100 and 200 level, but students cannot count both a 100-level survey and a 200-level seminar on substantially the same content. This means students can count:
- HST 130: Ancient World Survey OR HST 201: Ancient World Seminar
- HST 140: Modern World Survey OR HST 202: Modern World Seminar
- HST 110: Early America Survey OR HST 211: Early America Seminar,
- HST 120: Modern America Survey OR HST 212: Modern America Seminar
toward the 18 credits required for the history minor, provided they have at least nine credits in history at the 300- or 400-level.
