Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Administration - School Building Leader (SBL) and District Leader (SDL) Concentration

Main Page Content

Description

Candidates entering Educational Administration (EDA) have a career goal of school administrator, e.g., Assistant Principal, Principal, Teacher Leader, Director/Assistant Superintendent or Superintendent. Participation in the program leads to an advanced degree: Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) and an endorsement for certification as a School Building Leader (SBL) and School District Leader (SDL). These certifications are required for most administrative or leadership positions in a New York State school district. The department also offers a 12 credit Teacher Leadership Certificate.

The program is structured in a cohort-only format, with cohorts starting every Fall and Spring semester; cohorts are not started in the Summer session. Courses are offered in a hybrid format, with both face-to-face in-person instruction on Saturdays and the remaining class time in an online or asynchronous format. Course schedules are structured around school breaks and are not scheduled during those times. The Rochester Cohort (which starts every Fall and Spring semester) is taught at SUNY Brockport Downtown, 161 Chestnut Street, Rochester, New York. The GST (Greater Southern Tier) BOCES Cohort is taught at the GST BOCES in Painted Post, New York. The GST BOCES Cohort is enrollment-dependent, and the department is in a continuous recruitment mode with respect to that cohort. Every attempt is made to start a cohort each Spring semester but is not guaranteed.

The Educational Administration program is approved by the New York State Department of Education for both School Building Leader (SBL) and School District Leader (SDL) certification and Teacher Leader (TL). The program is accredited through CAEP (Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation).
