An in-depth understanding of mathematics is of great importance to many careers in our technologically complex society. Moreover, the study of mathematics promotes analytical and critical thinking skills, and therefore is a valuable part of any program of study. The minor in mathematics is designed to provide knowledge and skills to support career goals in a range of professions. A study of mathematics is a natural adjunct to the study of physics, chemistry, biology, earth science, business, economics, computer science, and the social sciences.

The minor in mathematics consists of six mathematics courses and allows students to select courses that coherently complement their particular major.

Admission to the Program

Any undergraduate student with a major in a subject other than mathematics can declare this minor.

Program Requirements

At least nine credits toward the minor must be completed at Brockport. If a Brockport student wishes to fill some of the requirements of the minor through course work at an institution other than Brockport, the student must first obtain the approval of the department chairperson.

Students must complete a minimum of six courses in mathematics, as follows:

Core Courses (12 credits)

  • MTH 201 Calculus I
  • MTH 202 Calculus II
  • MTH 281 Discrete Mathematics I

Elective Courses (at least 9 credits)

THREE courses in mathematics, chosen after consultation with the mathematics department advisor from:

  • MTH 203 Calculus III
  • MTH 243 Elementary Statistics
  • MTH 255 Differential Equations

With the consent of the mathematics department advisor, the approved college-level statistics courses are acceptable as a substitute for MTH 243. As of the publication of this catalog, they include ECN 204, PSH 202, SOC 200 and HLS 488.

A judicious choice of electives can lend a distinct focus to the mathematics minor. For example, a student with an interest in statistics might choose MTH 203, MTH 346, and MTH 446, while a student with an interest in applied statistics can take MTH 346, MTH 441, and MTH 442. Many other choices are possible. The mathematics department advisor can assist in choosing electives to complement each student's plan of study.
