Description

The studio art major is designed to provide a well-rounded, multi-disciplinary education in the appreciation and creation of visual art and design, encompassing two-dimensional and three-dimensional media, art and design history and criticism, and a four-course disciplinary concentration in one area such as Ceramics, Drawing, Graphic Design, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture. Students majoring in art are encouraged to explore other knowledge areas through a double major and/or minors. NOTE: For GRAPHIC DESIGN CONCENTRATION requirements, scroll further down the page.

Admission to the Program

Anyone can declare this major. There is no portfolio review for the BA/BS Art Studio major.

General Education Requirements (38* credits)

Major Departmental Requirements

For Concentrations in Ceramics, Drawing, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, or Sculpture (42 Credits):

For the concentration in Graphic Design (45 Credits):

* Foundational courses are followed by "[YR 1]" and must be taken in the first year.

Additional Degree Requirements

Students in the studio art major pursue either a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree, and must complete the corresponding degree's requirements.

In addition to the course requirements above, students must meet the following requirements:

  1. A minimum grade of "C" must be attained in all courses in the major.
  2. No more than 54 credits in studio art courses can be used to satisfy the 120-credit requirement for the BA or BS degree.
  3. VSW Summer Intensive courses may not be used to complete BA/BS degree requirements without departmental permission.
  4. A maximum of 21 transfer credits will be accepted by the department toward the studio art major. This is stated on your Degree Audit as "a minimum of 21 credits must be taken at Brockport."

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:

  1. Apply technical skills and the elements of art and principles of design to achieve basic visual communication and expression in one or more media.
  2. Identify and holistically discuss major works of art through formal and conceptual analysis, socio-historical contextualization, and interpretation.
  3. Identify and demonstrate ways to utilize and apply their skills and abilities to postgraduate professional practices.
  4. Make viable connections between concept and form/media.
  5. Create works of art and/or design that respond to contemporary, relevant issues inside and/or outside of the discipline.
